Why is British Residency significant?

The Residency’s ruined buildings preserve the memory of the 1857 siege of Lucknow. Built between 1780 and 1800, the complex served as the residence of the British Resident General, who represented the British at the Nawab’s court.

The siege began on 1 July 1857 and continued until 17 November 1857. Heavy damage from the uprising left ruins that now serve as a memorial to those events. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the complex as a centrally protected monument.

A cemetery beside the ruined church contains graves of people who died during the siege, including Sir Henry Lawrence. The 1857 Memorial Museum is also inside the complex; the Archaeological Survey of India manages and operates it.
